The Man Behind the Curiosities
I’m Kevin Penouilh, a New Orleans native who spent twenty years playing a high-stakes game of “Where Am I Living Now?”—bouncing from Air Force service in Delaware to selling real estate in New Orleans, Houston and New York City, with a post-Katrina detour to Houston and back again. I’ve finally landed for good in Houston with my partner Wes and our 2 four-legged supervisors, Ziva and Marlena.
The “Before” Montage: From 2000 to 2004, I served as a C-5 Crew Chief, Base Bugler, and Honor Guard member, helping keep the world’s largest cargo planes in the air through the intensity of 9/11. I traded the flight line for sixteen years of real estate and property management, navigating everything from New Orleans ghosts to tenants who thought “maintenance” was a suggestion. Somewhere in the middle of that chaos—specifically 2011—I picked up a crochet hook to keep my sanity. It turns out, after two decades of managing massive machinery and even higher-maintenance people, I preferred making things with actual structural integrity.
The Craft & The Vibe: Don’t expect doilies. I’m more “Victorian attic” than “Grandma’s living room,” If it looks like it belongs in a haunted mansion or a high-end whiskey bar, I’m probably making it.
The Essentials:
- The Diet: Powered by Community Coffee , Flamin hot dill cheetos and pork rinds
- The Hobbies: Managing “The Yarn Bombers” fantasy football team or wandering through a D&D campaign as an elf named Zephyr.
I’ve officially retired from the housing market for Crocheted Curiosities and Rarities. I have also recently begun to write my own crochet patterns. I make things that are one-of-a-kind, slightly sarcastic, and built to survive everything from a spilled beer to a 3:00 AM existential crisis.
